How much do you charge for a painting commission?
Before I can gauge an exact quote, I’d need to know:
- The composition of what you want to be painted.
- Size of the canvas (I do anywhere from 9×12″ in. – 5×8′ ft.)
- Style of painting (For ex: either contemporary or realistic).
- Colour palette (For ex: full colour or black and white).
- How many figures/portraits in each piece.
- How much of the each figure is included. (For ex: just up to the shoulders/collar bone, half/full body, etc.)
- What’s in the background (if any).
- If there is a deadline. Any commissions requested for deadlines within 1 week will have a rush order fee applied.
- If you need the piece shipped to a specific location.

What kind of paint do you use?
I usually paint acrylic on canvas for both custom commissions and live art paintings. However I’m also open to other mediums such as watercolour, pencil, and charcoal.
I’ve provided the information and agreed on the quote, what are the next steps?
If you decide to go ahead and work with me for a piece, I will send you a contract with the terms and conditions, which I will need signed and emailed back to me. I will also need a 50% down payment (in Canadian dollars) of the overall price, which can be sent by email transfer or paid in cash.
This ensures a commitment to contract, as well as cover any material/supplies, and work on the initial rough drafts for the final concept (which I will further discuss below).
…Okay, so I’ve signed the contract and paid the down payment, what’s next?
After the signed contract and down payment are received (preferably via email transfer), turnaround for initial draft(s) will usually be 5-8 days depending on complexity of concept. Once both parties settle on a final concept, work on the final painting will be started and an estimated date of completion will also be provided.
What happens once the commission is finished?
The remaining payment is due once the provided image of the finished work (sent by email) is deemed satisfactory to the client, who has then 7 days to pay remaining fees.
Clients are then free to receive their finished piece or raw digital files (for digital illustrations) after remaining payment is paid. Finished paintings will then be available for pick up but can be delivered/shipped for an extra fee.
Payments can be made in cash, email transfer, and PayPal. Payments with credit cards will be subject to additional charges.
